Big Buckhead Church was constituted about the year 1787, with James Mathews, Sanders Walker, and Joshia Taylor acting as presbytery. It must rank as the third Baptist Church in the State of Georgia. The name was derived from the stream upon which it was located. The "Dripping Ford" was known as the place of baptism. On the present site or nearby four houses of worship have stood. The first of logs, the second was framed and worth about $300.00, completed in 1807, third was built of brick in 1830, but for some defects deemed unsafe and gave place to the present building. The last is a neat structure costing three thousand dollars.
With a long history of the Church there was also a Battle fought here between the Calvary of Confederate General Joe Wheeler and Yankee General Judson Kilpatrick. It was a Confederate victory over the invading Yankees. The Yankees retreated across Buckhead creek using a nearby bridge once across the bridge the Yankees set fire to the bridge. Dousing the flames the resourceful southerners used the pews from the church to repair the bridge and give chase on the Yankees. |
